10.4 Inner Excellence/ACT: Closing Thoughts and Song

Hope you enjoyed my conversation with Jim Murphy about his book, Inner Excellence, and its convergence with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Here we present some of our closing thoughts, followed by a song, "Found," by Jared Foos, off his inaugural solo album, "Who Loves You Baby." ENJOY and Spread the word about Jared, he's mega-talented and needs more exposure. And send me any songs or artists that need more exposure and I'll do what I can to feature them in my series.

[00:00:26] Somebody get this guy some help!

[00:00:30] I'm going to start with you.

[00:00:32] I'm going to start with you.

[00:00:34] I'm going to start with you.

[00:00:36] Do you have any closing thoughts for us?

[00:00:38] Yeah, so Interexcellence is very different than, say, sports psychology just because of the depth.

[00:00:43] We're pursuing wholeheartedness and heart transformation because Interexcellence,

[00:00:47] the belief is that your heart is the key to your life.

[00:00:49] And so we want to train the heart to become a certain type of person,

[00:00:52] a type of person that's not attached to what they want and can't control,

[00:00:56] the type of person that loves most what's most empowering.

[00:00:59] And so to do that, we want to learn to master our ego,

[00:01:02] the part of ourselves that's always comparing and always threatened and never satisfied.

[00:01:06] And so Interexcellence is largely about self mastery and surrender,

[00:01:10] surrendering your minimal strength for the same strength that spins the earth and grows grass,

[00:01:15] holds the stars in place so we can walk in love not fear.

[00:01:18] So that's a little thing I'd like to leave with you, doctor.

[00:01:22] Yeah, absolutely. And I just want to thank you for being here and for putting the work in.

[00:01:27] I know how much work it has to be to write a book from start to finish,

[00:01:33] from research developing the ideas to finalizing the edits.

[00:01:39] And I also want to mention that the things that you talk about,

[00:01:43] I could imagine that some people may see your background and think,

[00:01:48] oh, this is a book for professional athletes.

[00:01:51] This is a book for those upper echelon performers.

[00:01:55] In reality, I think that Interexcellence is for anybody.

[00:01:59] I think that the concepts that you talk about in the specific instruction that you get helps anybody be the best version of themselves.

[00:02:09] So I appreciate that and don't limit yourself to just the pros.

[00:02:13] I think you got a lot to offer a lot of different people if you ever have any consideration to work with other populations.

[00:02:20] I do help people that have major anxiety and natural trauma as well.

[00:02:25] I try and help whoever I can.

[00:02:28] Just to summarize some of my own closing thoughts after my discussion with Jim,

[00:02:34] this internal relationship with ourselves is something that follows us wherever we go at all times.

[00:02:42] The fact that consciously three words that describe us, I, here and now, don't necessarily apply to our minds.

[00:02:51] Our minds love to focus on the past, the past us, the painful memories,

[00:02:58] things that happen to a small frail, powerless child that still affect us as a grown adult.

[00:03:06] Our minds live in the future trying to predict every circumstance we may find ourselves in,

[00:03:12] creating snap judgments of what's unfolding in front of us.

[00:03:17] Though with the amount of information that we're exposed to on a daily basis now,

[00:03:22] there's no way our minds can be correct in everything that they do.

[00:03:26] Much like a Google search engine, they're spitting out possibilities.

[00:03:31] We inherently desire order and judgment in our world.

[00:03:36] Yet if we create a false sense of those, our world is bound to crumble as we'll eventually consciously realize what we're doing.

[00:03:44] Realize that we are fraudulently creating a story that isn't necessarily true.

[00:03:50] We need to find ways to be comfortable living in each conscious moment of our lives,

[00:03:56] letting our minds do their predictive thing in the background of our life,

[00:04:00] but not getting too attached to the content of what they're saying.

[00:04:04] We can utilize the intention of our minds to live a much more peaceful existence.

[00:04:10] Much like a demanding parent that means well, but doesn't always say the right things.

[00:04:16] I'm a firm believer that these are things we should be teaching to our children.

[00:04:22] Again, it's something that we experience throughout our waking lives.

[00:04:27] It's something that develops significantly with puberty and throughout adolescence,

[00:04:34] leading to a lot of teenage and young adult angst and anxiety.

[00:04:38] If we could better prepare our youths for this destined experience they will have,

[00:04:44] maybe we could cut down on some of the rates of suicide and addiction,

[00:04:48] whether it be to a drug, alcohol or our phones and technologies.

[00:04:53] Maybe we can find a way as a society to have a better sense of inner peace and calm,

[00:05:01] to be the most excellent versions of ourselves, but start at a young age.

[00:05:07] I implore you if you have children to teach them some of these concepts.

[00:05:13] Help them to understand what their inner dialogue is, why it exists,

[00:05:19] and how to navigate it as we traverse through the 21st century

[00:05:23] in this new age of massive and expedited expanse of technologies and information.

[00:05:30] I don't just think that it's something that would be good for us.

[00:05:34] I really think it's going to be a necessary component of society if we are to continue to move forward.

[00:05:41] Otherwise, we may remain stuck in the superficial cycle of getting away from things that are uncomfortable

[00:05:49] and experiencing temporary bouts of happiness at the expense of meaningful and valued and fulfilled living.

[00:05:58] Thanks for listening and hopefully this series is a little bit more uplifting

[00:06:02] than some of the past series which tend to focus on the problems within the system.

[00:06:08] I'll stick around after the disclaimer for another listen to an absolutely hugely talented young musical artist,

[00:06:17] Jared Fuss, with another song from his solo album Who Loves You Baby.

[00:06:22] Let's help Jared get some of the recognition that he deserves

[00:06:26] as he's got an absolutely beautiful voice and is incredibly talented,

[00:06:31] both playing as well as writing and seeing a project from beginning to finish.

[00:06:36] He deserves a little bit more notice and recognition than he's getting now.

[00:06:40] Hope you enjoy his music as much as I do.

[00:06:44] Somebody get this guy some help!

[00:07:06] You need help like this guy. Call your own doctor.

[00:07:36] You're found in your mind that you're all in your head

[00:07:47] You wanted to run but you're stuck here instead

[00:07:50] You're found in your heart that you're lost in a soul

[00:07:54] You're grabbing a grip as you're losing control

[00:07:57] You wanted to sing but you're losing your voice

[00:08:00] You're blaming the kid but it wasn't his choice

[00:08:04] You wanted to yell but you whispered a name

[00:08:07] You're under a rock as you're chasing your fame

[00:08:10] I know you believe and I know that you agree

[00:08:23] And I know you're singing and I know that you believe

[00:08:41] You're found in your thoughts that you're stuck in a dream

[00:08:44] You wanted the cake but you hated the cream

[00:08:47] You're found in your eyes that you're losing your sight

[00:08:51] You're walking away but you're begging to fight

[00:08:54] You wanted to dance but you don't have her heart

[00:08:57] Those stitches they sew, they rip you apart

[00:09:00] You've filed a trail but you cover the track

[00:09:04] And eyes run front as they went through your back

[00:09:07] I know you believe and I know that you agree

[00:09:20] And I know you're singing and I know that you believe

[00:09:34] That you believe

[00:09:39] That you believe

[00:09:50] You
